illawarra grammar
mass timber passivhouse junior & senior school, auditorium and library
The new Hoskins building for the Illawarra Grammar School features state of the art junior and senior school learning spaces.
Beyond the brief’s functional requirements, a truly sustainable and energy efficient building was of utmost priority. As such the desire for building with a low carbon footprint using timber as the main construction material and complying with the stringent international Passivehouse standard to provide a highly energy efficient building were key.
This innovative building will provide transparent and flexible learning spaces, a 150 people auditorium and a new junior library.
The Hoskins building will be the first school building in NSW to be certified to the ‘International Passivhaus Standard’.
Featuring a mass timber structure, timber cladding with triple glazed windows, a green roof and ample solar PV, the Hoskins building will be carbon positive, storing more carbon and producing more energy than required for it’s standalone function.
