lockdown studio

creative space designed to passivhaus standard.

With the need for an escape to work creatively and make music during lockdowns away from the main residence the idea for this modest studio was born.

The structure was installed in large parts by the owners themselves during on and off lockdown phases. The cross-laminated timber (CLT) envelope was prefabricated off-site, and installed in a day using only manual labor due to the inability to use cranes in this bushland setting.

The interior of this minimal space features exposed timber walls, floors and ceilings that, in combination with the heat recovery ventilation system, ensures a healthy natural indoor environment.

Large sliding panels made from thin CLT separate the music room when not used, allowing the remainder of the area to be left as a blank calm background for any type of creative work.

The studio is designed to the Passivhaus standard.

The facade is being clad in local untreated Blackbutt timber left to naturally grey over time. The rough sawn timber is creating a connection to the surrounding bushland and exposed timber walls of the internal spaces.

To further minimise the projects environmental impact, all timber for the cladding is sourced as waste from a local joiner and installed as per availability over time.
